Drag Racing fans were treated to a feast on Saturday 21 May, when the Telecel 2016 Drag Racing series revved into action at Donnybrook. Almost 70 competitors turned out for the event after a long break since the last event of the Telecel 2015 Series held in October last year.
Unfavourable track conditions caused the postponement of this year’s first event from 24 April to 21 May, but it was worth the wait according to competitors who praised the new grippy track surface. Nearly 3,000 fans thronged Donnybrook to witness the hardcore racing, as bike and car competitors gave it all they had to prove their worth on the track. Some competitors travelled from as far as Kwekwe and Bulawayo to participate in the highly anticipated event.
The track played host to a variety of powerful machines, ranging from highly modified super bikes and nitrous breathing V8 sport cars to standard road-going, daily vehicles.Hard racing was the name of the game in all vehicle and bike classes.
The sun set on the day’s proceedings, climaxing in the well represented Eliminations event, with Leslie Carlson and Alan Cacace being crowned as fastest bike and car of the day respectively, albeit with second place winners right on their tails. There are still three more dates remaining in the 2016 Drag Racing Series, the next date being Sunday 3 July.
