Our Place. Our Planet. Our Responsibility. This month, Harare joins the world in promoting a clean, safe and habitable environment by taking part in the Clean Up the World Campaign. Clean Up The World is an initiative that was started to help communities begin to take responsibility for the environment. With over 35 million volunteers across the globe, it is clear that we are not only making a positive change in our respective communities, but also contributing towards a better planet.
Did you know? The pieces of litter you make each day add up to tonnes of litter at the end of the year? Billions of dollars is spent annually cleaning up the waste that people have thoughtlessly tossed out on the streets and other public spaces. Imagine if each of us tried a bit harder to pick up our litter and thought about the impact of our waste on the environment? Imagine how much money could be saved and used for other more important services!
Miracle Missions Trust, a networking organisation working in community development and waste management, decided to help make a positive change. They have partnered with the City of Harare and signed up to become a member of the Clean Up the World campaign. In their efforts to combat the negative impact of litter, Miracle Missions – together with volunteers from the business community in Msasa – are holding a big Msasa Clean Up on 4 September.
This event gives the community the opportunity to take part in an initiative which teaches us all to be responsive to the environment and thus become responsible environmental citizens. It must be noted that this is just the beginning. A litter-free community will be achieved with continuous improvement, education and most of all, having bins to store the litter in.
We as members of the communities we reside in, are environmental ambassadors. It does not matter if you are in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Europe, or Asia. Mobilize your community to make a positive impact, and stop littering in your community. It all begins with one person taking a stand for environmental sustainability. One person, making an effort to put their litter in the bin makes all the difference. Come join us Clean Up the World!
