Award-winning Prince Edward School Jazz Band proved why they are a staple at HIFA’s Coca-Cola Green stage when they presented a thrilling performance of classical jazz music yesterday.
The school boys presented a polished, flawless act which proved their worth as a favourite for many festival goers. The visitors to the Green could not resist dancing or clapping as the band, famed for nurturing young Zimbabwean jazz maestros, belted out their songs.
P.E Jazz Band started its 4pm – 5pm set with its classical jazz fusions before introducing the Pop Band who came in with good vocals. The Pop Band performed renditions of South African-based music outfit Micasa’s songs such as Your Body Language among others.
As if this was not enough, the school boys’ band later introduced a guest artist Roben Dawani who came in with some soothing cover versions of Zahara’s songs such as Destiny, an act which did justice to cap another good outing for the band at HIFA.
P.E Jazz Band’s act came on the heels of another good showcase by multiple awards winning Watershed Marimba Band who gave a scintillating performance on the same stage on Tuesday. School bands have been setting a trend of giving memorable performances at HIFA for the past years.
Since its formation in 2001, P.E Jazz Band has brought to the stage excellent musicians. This year the band had another notable name in 16 year old Takakunda Mukundu – son to award-winning fiery guitarist and music producer Clive Mono Mukundu. Takakunda, who is originally a guitarist, showed great flexibility as he played drums on the day after the drummer failed to pitch up for the event.
Notable names to have come out of P.E Jazz Band in the past include the late Sam Mutukudzi, Garry Tight, Vimbayi Mukarakati, Thabani Gapara and many more.
