Renowned musician Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi will treat his fans to a massive homecoming show upon his return from a three months tour of United States, the Caribbean and UK.
The show, dubbed the Greatest Hits Concert, is set for Harare International Conference Centre on the eve of Independence Day. Fans will have an opportunity to pick the songs they want Tuku to perform. Mtukudzi explains, “The idea of the concert came about because we always get people asking us why we don’t perform certain songs at our shows. All the top songs that fans see as my greatest hits I will perform on the night,” said Mtukudzi.
The Greatest Hits Concert is being organised by Tuku Music in partnership with ZiFM Stereo, Impala Car Rental and Zimbo Jam. The partners have put together various competitions that will see Mtu-kudzi’s fans win tickets to the show and trips to some of Zimbabwe’s top tourism destinations. Another competition will see 20 lucky fans win a tour of the musician’s Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton. The tour will be topped off by lunch with Tuku himself at the arts centre’s restaurant.
Mtukudzi said, “As Tuku Music we can only do well if we build great relationships with our fans and other partners.” He said they brought on board their partners for the show as part of a vision to help build support structures for the music industry through work at Pakare Paye Arts Centre. Tuku and his band The Black Spirits, who recently got back from tour, are busy preparing for the concert, a first of its kind in Harare.
Oliver Mtukudzi is one of the top musicians to come out of Zimbabwe. He has performed in different countries across the globe. Through Pakare Paye Arts Centre Tuku has managed to groom young musicians, among them afro fusion group Tsvete and Munya Mataruse. During the course of his tour Mtukudzi, who is a UNICEF ambassador, was awarded a Global Service Award by the Skagit Valley College in the United States. This was in recognition of his “tireless devotion as a champion for the rights of the children in Africa.”
