Harare City Library had to close their Branch Library in Greendale just before Christmas because the roof was leaking and in danger of damaging the books. The building belongs to the City of Harare. Harare City Library operated the library service from it under a long-standing agreement.
Meanwhile, things are looking better for Highlands branch library. Tim Johnson, a Highlands resident, recently embarked on a personally driven project to give it a new lease of life. The exterior of the building badly needed maintenance, some repairs and a new coat of paint. The roof needed to be cleared of bougainvillea, which was threatening the whole structure.
To achieve this, he enlisted the help of fellow resident Andrew Halstead of Halstead Brothers, who supplied some timber, and of Astra Paints, who kindly provided paint. Johnson supplied the labour.
Johnson said the exercise had been very rewarding, especially since all the residents of the area to whom he has spoken have almost invariably provided something or offered to help. “There remains much to do inside the building. We are planning for new books and a small Internet café,” he said.
