Running a monthly community newspaper in Harare is proving an interesting endeavour. We’re not after ground shattering, hold-the-press kind of news (though we’re delighted when we get it!), what we’re keen on is seeking out what’s going on all around us, on our streets, in our homes, and letting you know about it. So in March we’re happy to be telling you all about the Homefields Centre, to talk about disabled access in Harare and give you updates on our roads and wetlands.
US-based Knight Foundation reiterates what we feel is important in community journalism. Writing last month, Michael Maness, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism and media innovation said, “Big media … favors high-impact, low-probability events,” such as shootings and natural disasters, “That makes it very difficult to tackle the kind of problems most communities face on a daily basis.”
With Harare News, we offer solutions, numbers for you to call and action you can take as a citizen. We feel you understand this, as we’re getting some good feedback from you, our readers. Feel free to react to the words that you read and tell us what you want.
This month Swift has come on board as a sponsor of one of our community focused articles. They join SEEFF and Blackstone Bookshop who have also shown their support in this way. It’s these kind of partnerships that will help see us through these tough times, enabling us to put journalists onto stories that we want to find out more about and to share with you.
