Edgars back in the game

image

Zimbabwe’s premier retail clothing store Edgars yesterday launched a new clothing line for men, at Royal Harare Golf Club.

Edgars has increasingly been under-subscribed in terms of men’s casual wear, being overshadowed over the years by fashion boutiques that sell imported clothes. Now it has released its new label Quote Urban Wear onto the market.

Carousel (Edgars Stores Limited’s production wing) manufacturing director Zeb Vella explained, “We realised that there was a gap in men casual wear so we decided to bring this label to the market.”

According to Vella, the label is registered locally and the clothes are also being designed and manufactured in the country. “Before the launch we took a year observing the local market. We even went on a nationwide tour with our range trying to get what our prospective market think and the response was very good, ” he said

When asked if the label stands a chance in a market that is widely dominated by cheap import products and second hand clothes Vella said, “It worried us a bit in the beginning but we are certain that we will make it because our products are high quality and theirs’ are low quality though cheaper.” He said people are always looking for the best product on the market and they are delivering just that.

Quote Urban Wear can be found in various stores in Harare including Edgars stores, Topics, Barons, Mic Davies/Brentoni and Raffles. The range offers chino pants, hooded jackets, Taylor check shirts, chatong shirts and cargo pants among others.

Thankfully, new songs stopped the show from being a pure nostalgia-wallow. Andro Queen should be the gold standard for bands still making music when they’re pushing 50: it’s a heartbreaking song with a military beat and mellow tone that still sounds unmistakably Pixies. Meanwhile, Indie Cindy could have come straight from the band’s imperial period. Its loud-quiet structure and chorus of “Indie Cindy, be in love with me, I beg for you to carry me” almost smells like an early-Nineties student union bar: all stale beer, Golden Virginia rollies and thwarted romance.

This is actually a great lesson about life and politics. When I look back at why certain people have won in politics, or why certain people have succeeded in business or media or other high profile forums, it is as much about their strengths as it is about how they make other competitors perform around them. Super star performers, when they are perceived as dominant, make competitors perform worse around them. They make others make mistakes, which in politics causes more losses than most any other effect.
