It’s a busy silly season with a lot of options for the whole family. Here are some highlights:
1. Zimbabwe Colour Run
Tomorrow! (Saturday 7th December)
Where: Borrowdale Race Course. Registration from 9am, starts 12pm. Adults $20, Kids $5.
A first for Zimbabwe, the Colour Run will see thousands of runners complete a 5km route along which they will have colourful powder thrown at them. There is also a huge lineup of artists performing including Chikwata 263, Chris Taylor, Charles Summerfield, DJ Dizzy and more. Some of the money raised will support charities such as the SPCA. With 6,400 followers on Facebook, it looks to be quite a spectacle and is definitely worth taking part in or at least going to watch!
5–22 December, $8
Reps theatre has a treat in store for children with their take on the Cinderella story, this time with local touch. Performances of the Christmas pantomime will be at 6.30pm every day except for Mondays and Sundays and the 2.30pm matinee on Saturdays and the closing day.
3. Talking to Death
1–22 December, $7
Also at Reps is a theatre play entitled Talking to Death every Sunday at 6:30pm in the George Barnes Rehearsal Room. The play, presented by 4D Arts Trust, is a uniquely interactive and intriguing show from the award-winning director of Roomates. Advance tickets are available at all Freshly Ground Coffee Bars around Harare.
4. Up Market
Every Wednesday and Saturday
For your Christmas shopping make a stop at the morning market on Maasdorp Avenue, Belgravia from 8.30 to 1pm.Offering a wide range of delicious products from hand-made yoghurt to freshly picked farmers’ produce, including food you might want on your Xmas table.
5. Miss Heritage World
7 December, $15 POSTPONED
Harare will, for the first time, be host to beauty contestants from 40 countries around the world in the Miss Heritage World finals. The event will be held at Rainbow Towers in the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) from 8pm till late.
6. Hip Hop Awards
11 December, $10
The fourth edition of the Zimbabwe Hip Hop Awards is set for 7 Arts Theatre, Avondale Shopping Centre. This is where this year’s best achievers in the genre will be recognised. There will also be performances by various local musicians including Tehn Diamond (pictured), Mariachi, Jnr Brown and MMT. The event is scheduled to start at 7.30 pm, till late.
7. Comedy Fiesta
11–13 December, $10
Organisers of the monthly comedy night, Simuka Comedy, will hold a three day fiesta at Zimbabwe German Society (ZGS), Book Café and Oliver Restaurant. The line-up of comedians includes Doc Vikela, Simba the Comic King, Cde Fatso, Michael K, Edgar Langaveldt, Q the Boss, Clive Chigubu and Ntando Van Moyos. All performances start at 7.30pm.
8. Zahara, Tuku show
20 December, $20
South African music sensation Zahara will return to Harare to market her new album Phendula at 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale. The musician will share the stage with the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi and fast rising star Tariro ‘Negitare’ Ruzvidzo.
9. Neverland Zimbabwe
21 December, $20
Old Georgians Sports Club will host 12 local and international artists including Alex Kenji (Italy), Yolanda Be Cool (Australia), Zack Edwards (USA), Locnville (South Africa), Jason Le Roux, Chris Taylor and DJ Rax (all three from Harare). 1,000 advanced tickets are already on sale at Delicious and Sunglass Express, Sam Levy’s Village.
10. Foxxy Wednesday
Every Wednesday, $5
Make a date with the high riding reggae DJ MC Smiley and the Legendary Sound every Wednesday night at Red Fox Hotel in Greendale. The show starts at 8 pm.
11. Maad Sunday
Every Sunday, $10
It’s judgment night every Sunday at Red Fox Hotel as highly rated reggae DJ outfit, Judgment Yard will be playing weekly shows. Shows start at 8pm.
12. Passa Passa
24 & 31 December, free
Mabvuku streets will be set alight as local DJs and MCs come together to stage a street party dubbed the Passa Passa at Kamunhu shopping centre. Both shows start at 6pm to 6am.
13. New Year’s Eve @ Old Georgians
31 December, $15 advance or $20 at the gate
Old Georgians Sports Club will shut down the year with a live performance by the Rusike Brothers Band and Jump up Jill’s. Advance tickets are available at the venue.
