City of Harare yesterday held its Milestone Awards ceremony at the City Sports Centre to honour its employees for long service. 1,248 employees who have served council for periods ranging from five to 45 years received certificates and rewards for their continuous service.
A couple of thousand people turned out for the fourth annual ceremony, with the Mayor and Mayoress of Harare attending as the guests of honour. Most councillors were also present.
Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said the awards were meant to honour those workers who have given sense to the City. He also said that council would also consider introducing monthly and quarterly performance awards to motivate workers.
In his address, His Worship the Mayor, Bernard Manyenyeni said that the awards come at a time when council has seized the implementation of a results based management system as a strategy to achieve the City’s vision of world class status by 2025.
“Vision 2025 is anchored on two pillars namely stakeholder participation and building high performance teams,” he said.
Eight people received awards for serving council for 45 years. They received a wheelbarrow, shovel and generator each courtesy of Kingdom Bank. 49 employees celebrated 40 years of service to the local authority and received a shovel and wheelbarrow.
The rewarded workers and their families showed jubilation at being recognised for their long service. One unidentified recipient of the 40-year award temporarily stole the limelight after his wife pushed him from the podium back to his seat in his brand new wheelbarrow.
