The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) kicked off on Monday and will run until 10 December. Organisations dealing with different issues on gender and women have a whole host of activities lined up for the next two weeks. Here we give you a selection to choose from:
Walk the Talk – 10km March
30 November, 6am
Organised by UN Women, Musasa Project
People will converge to do a 10km march from Mount Pleasant to Belgravia. It starts early to raise awareness during peak traffic time.
Door to door in Mbare suburbs
30 November,10am
Organised by The Girls Legacy
People will meet at 10am at Chitsere School in Mbare to go door to door encouraging community members of the high density suburb to report cases of rape and violence
Vagina Dialogues
30 November , 6-8pm
Organised by Tegatogether Single Mothers
Women will meet at Maestro, 146 Enterprise Road in Highlands, to discuss issues affecting them including gender based violence. This event costs $10. Guest speakers include gynaecologist Dr Nyaumwe, Tete Rosie, MC will be Tinopona Katsande, entertainment by Dudu Manhenga.
Film screening: ‘Peretera Manet, Half the Sky, Turning oppression into opportunity’
3 December, 6pm
Organised by Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe at Book Café
Film screening raise awareness of GBV. People will gather, watch film then discuss lessons learnt from the film.
Painting the town orange
3 and 4 December, 6.30am
Organised by UN Women and Katswe Sisterhood
Meet at 25 Edmond Road, Belvedere then leave for the CBD to distribute fliers and calenders at different points, targeting terminals. After the march there will be a discussion on GBV at 25 Edmond Road, Belvedere offices.
Launch of SADC Gender Protocol Barometer for Zimbabwe
10 December, 1pm POSTPONED TO 16 JANUARY 2014
Organised by Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe
First a lunch at Rainbow Towers, then the Minister Of Gender and Community Affairs will launch the barometer.
