Celebrated artists came together at Rainbow 7 Arts on Friday night to advocate for environmental preservation.
The Green Concert, hosted by the Green Ambassador Dereck Mpofu, saw performances by Albert Nyathi, Pastor G, the Green Rainbow Choir and the Green Ambassador himself.
Dereck Mpofu told Harare News that he is working hardto get more people involved in environmental issues.
“I am very concerned about the future of the Zimbabwean environment…it all lies in our hands,” he said.
He urged the people from the top to be the initiators in ensuring that everyone works towards protecting animals and preserving the environment.
“The main aim of this event was to bring all the environmental players together and speak with one voice on the Zimbabwean environment.”
Plastics Incorporated Company gave plastic litter bins to everyone who attended the concert and demonstrated how to use them.
Government ministers, who were invited as guests of honour, called on the youth to partake in the environmental issues.
Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Mr Saviour Kasukuwere emphasised the importance of engaging the youth in the issues of environment preservation saying they are committed all they need is support.
While Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Francis Nhema said: “It is our responsibility to look after the environment because it is our future.”
The main highlight of the concert, however, was the music, drama and poetry, all focusing on environmental preservation.
The stage itself was decoratedwith vegetation and stuffed wild animalsto demonstrate to the audience what needs to be preserved.
Led by Dereck Mpofu, the Green Rainbow Choir, which comprised of disabled and orphaned youths from different cultures, staged a great performance.
The artists got the crowd clapping and dancing. Mpofu especially got the audience emotional with his last song entitled Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe.
Mpofu’s work and music has been recognised by the corporations who sponsored this event. Sponsors included Steward Bank, Plastic Incorporated, Proudly Zimbabwe, Africom, Retail association of Zimbabwe, OK Spar and EMA.
The Green Concert event is part of the Green Ambassador’s mission to promote positive attitudes and initiatives with regards to environmental issues. Areas of importance to him include proper waste disposal, humanitarian work and protecting animals.
