September is the month to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into some neighbourhood clean up action. It’s ‘Clean up the World Weekend’ from the 20-22 September, an international campaign, which aims to unite millions globally in doing something for their environment.
Here in Harare, Miracle Missions – Clean & Green Zimbabwe is encouraging everyone to use the opportunity to get involved in OUR PLACE…OUR PLANET…OUR RESPONSIBLIBLITY and make a difference in the area you live and work and give the city a big clean up.
Sorting out the litter on your street and in your neighbourhood can seem like a daunting task. Miracle Missions has been organising cleanups for a few years now and we have been getting some great experience and making an impact too. It’s easy to forget just how dirty some areas were but looking at our ‘before and after’ shots of areas that we have focused on makes us realise how important this work is.
Soon, we’ll be posting What can we do for our city, a list of practical steps that you can take to get involved. Whether you are a resident, a shop-owner, a churchgoer, part of a school, use a super-market – or all of the above – you are part of the community.
In the time that we have been doing this, so many excellent partners have come on board to make it possible. Swift have given wonderful support with sponsored safety vests, refuge bags and gloves, donated spades and brooms, a team of volunteers and a large vehicle on site to assist City of Harare with the transportation of the rubbish and debris to Pomona landfill. Sign of the Times has been integral in helping us to get over 120 dustbins out across the city. Versapak has supported clean ups, sponsored dustbins at bus stops and donated a dustbin trolley and wheelie bin to Pomona shopping centre.
If you would like to organise a big clean up, get in touch and we’ll send you information on what steps to take. We’ll also help you to get permission from the Council. But if you can’t wait to get going, then get a small group together – fewer than six of you – to clean your own verge, culvert and drains and take the rubbish to the dump yourself. It’s that simple!
