Art institutions across Harare are holding art classes for children in all sorts of mediums.
National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ), First Floor Gallery (FFG), Kifoc at the Kabin and the Germany School Society (GSS) have all put together a programme for kids during the holidays. We list them for you below:
National Gallery of Zimbabwe will be holding its annual Holiday Art Camp, sponsored by LaRule, from 19 to 23 August. Children from Grade 0 to Upper Six are invited to participate.
They will be taught by experienced artists and instructors from the gallery and other specialists who bring variety to the offering.
NGZ Education Officer Akim Nyakudya explains: “This is a platform we created for school children to work in a gallery environment. We expect to enroll about 75 children.”
The lessons will take place from 9am to 1pm for younger children and until3pm for older students.
“On Friday 23 August we will then exhibit the artwork that will be created during the camp, presenting awards to outstanding children,” said Nyakudya.
The weeklong camp costs $30.

First Floor Gallery is running a similar program for both children and emerging artists. School going students can attend lessons from 10am to 12noon everyday during the holiday and when school reopens, lessons will be held on the weekends.
The lessons are $5 a day for individuals and $3 for those who come in groups.
FFG Public Relations and Marketing Director, Marcus Gora says, “Our education program is broad based and flexible.”
The gallery delivers a range of master-classes and workshops to support emerging artists including oil painting, writing, curating, video art and art in public spaces. while working with both children and mature students who want to learn art skills like drawing and painting or art history.
Students can also use the gallery space and the library as well as artists’ studios to support their learning.

Kifoc at the Cabin in Kensington will hold its holiday workshops from 5 to 7 August. The workshops include lessons in photography as well as acting, dance, singing and modeling.
Kifoc Founder Beverley Mathison explains, “Our program is about learning social and artistic skills, communication and having fun focusing on teaching skills to kids aged 6 to 13yrs who have a particular interest and desire to excel in the Performing Arts.”
During a cycle of carefully structured sessions children are guided and encouraged by a team of experienced instructors. The programs will run daily from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and costs $50 for all three days. In Newlands, the Germany School Society will hold its art and craft lessons at 10 Argyll Drive. The lessons will run from 19 to 23 August under the theme: kids for a greener earth, encouraging students to use recycled material in their creations.
