Zambezi News has done it again. A full to overflowing Book Café was last night treated to the premiere of the long-awaited second season of the popular spoof news show. Magamba Network founders Samm Monro and Tongai Makawa (aka Cde Fatso and Outspoken respectively) and the team responsible for Zambezi News have taken the show to new heights this season.
The news programme takes a refreshing and satirical look at some of the most difficult issues facing our society, including politics, class, race and social issues. Joined by comedian and actor Michael K, the trio present a hilarious send-up of the television news genre, poking fun at Zimbabwean life with a daring and colourful brilliance.
Launching their second season with a teaser “Elections Special” episode, Magamba Network showed once again why they are at the cutting edge of what they call ‘cultural activism’ in Zimbabwe. In addition to the premiere episode of their new second season, they also introduced their new music video entitled, “Ballots in the Box”, a hip-hop song that makes humorous fun of the up-coming elections which are to take place on July 31st. The Book Café venue was packed with hundreds of fans of the news series who had come to laugh and cheer on this hip, yet informative initiative which this time around was directed by Kevin Hanssen. Trading in humour and popular culture tropes, the Zambezi News team is one to look out for in the future when they release their new series in its entirety. Judging by the capacity crowd who roared their approval with each joke, this initiative can only grow and go far.
