Renovation of Meikles Hotel’s North Wing is near completion with the installation of new kitchen equipment, flooring, bathrooms, toilets and world class gym underway.
The $8.5m renovation project started in the middle of last year and is set to restore the hotel’s status as a world class venue.
It involves refashioning the entire North Wing, completely renovating all suites and bedrooms including major changes to the bathrooms.
The Presidential and Imperial Suites are being equipped with new technology including plasma televisions as well as new bedding.
Other rooms will also benefit from an upgrade of air conditioning, new carpets, public elevators and a wall of mirrors which are glued on the inside walls to brighten the building.
La Fontaine Grill Room which was one of the best-known and longest-running restaurants in Harare is being renovated with new carpets, curtains, linen and finishings, while the kitchen has been completely gutted and is being transformed into a gleaming new culinary facility.
Managing Director of the hotel Karl Snater says, “The renovations will give a fresh look to Harare’s leading 5 Star hotel. We believe our Presidential Suite is going to be the best in the country and probably in the whole region.”
In a bid to be eco-friendly, the hotel will be turning over to energy saving light bulbs, while the new kitchen equipment will be operating largely on gas to save electricity.
The Club Lounge for Club Room guests on the 11th Floor has also been refurnished. Its balcony, which has an exceptional view of the city up to the new Airport Road, has been repainted to match the refurbishments.
Meikles General Manager Tinashe Munjoma revealed that “90% of the work has been done. We expect completion of the project by the end of August.”
The completion had been scheduled for the end of July but was delayed because of material which had to be shipped from South Africa.
The renovation comes in anticipation of booming of business in the coming years.
“We believe there is a bright future for Zimbabwe. We envisage a growth in corporate business coming to Harare and tourists visiting the country will all be coming through our capital,” said Snater.
Meikles Hotel is located at corner Third Street and Jason Moyo Avenue in the CBD.
