It was all joy and funfair at the annual special schools sports day at the Italian Sports Club in Monovale last week.

Organised by Vimbainashe Learning Institute (VLI), tug of war, five-aside soccer, volleyball, three legged and walking races were all on the menu for an exciting day.

Of the seven schools scheduled to participate only Gateway, Homefield, Mufakose I High and the host VLI arrived but the day went ahead and participants delivered spirited performances.

Mufakose dominated the five-aside soccer beating Gateway 8-0 in the first leg, before going on to beat VLI 3-0. This earned them the top position with 6 points.

VLI was in second position with 3 points, superseding Gateway on goal aggregate.

In volleyball it was Gateway that dominated, winning against Mufakose in the first match before narrowly beating VLI by 2 point in the finals.

Gateway teacher Barbra Muchawira was pleased with the day: “The event is a great interaction platform for our students. It is something they really look forward to.”

Popular musician, Peace Ndlovu a.k.a BaShupi gave an electric performance during the entertainment break. He engaged the students in dance and sing along. And delighted his audience by calling VLI student Tendai Sithole on stage to lead his peers in Jah Prayzah’s hit song Tsviriyo.

BaShupi explained: “I perform in so many places but these children don’t get a chance to come because of various reasons. It is really good that I got to perform for them in their own space without drunken people pushing them around. They are my fans and I feel honored to perform and interact with them.”

VLI is a school for special needs students.
