A motor vehicle workshop Pesket Plant Hire was yesterday afternoon gutted by fire, which spread quickly to nearby car-sale Hutock Motors. Several trucks, cars and buses were also destroyed in the flames. The workshop is located along Robson Manyika just a few hundred metres from busy Roadport.
Chaos ensued as people tried to drive some of the vehicles to safety while others rushed to catch a glimpse of the huge fire.
“The whole place was covered with smoke and thieves took advantage. We lost four brand new generators among other things,” said an elderly man who works at Hutock.
It was reported that the fire was a result on an unattended tire that was being burnt at the workshop.
Airtime vendor Tichaona Matamba was on the scene: “I saw a cloud of smoke emerging from the workshop, a few minutes later vehicles were being rushed out, people rushing to see what was going on. Some were even risking their lives getting close to take pictures.”
Matamba said the fire brigade arrived with four fire hoses nearly an hour later but with no water. It took them time to find a water source before connecting their water pump and pipes. Police later blocked the street whilst the firemen did their work. The fire took at least two hours to put out.
Another eyewitness Dambuzo Tigere said, “I was going on with my business at the Fourth Street bus terminus when I saw a huge cloud of smoke from the car-sale. Our city needs to be serious with how they put out fire to avoid extensive damage.”
Robson Manyika was temporarily closed to motorists causing congestion on Robert Mugabe Way. Officials are still not certain of the extent of damage in monetary terms.
